Historic Gorge and walking trail

The historic gorge was begun in 1859, by Messrs Edwards and party, as a tail race to sluice gravel and sand from upstream. Cutting through this granite was a remarkable achievement in the early pick, shovel and blasting powder days. During the 1880s, it was deepened and lengthened using dynamite.

Nearby you can see the dam wall that was built across the original water course of the Yackandandah Creek, prior to the gorges construction.

The gorge now makes up part of an idyllic 5km scenic walk with views of cascading water flowing through the rugged countryside as the path twists and turns through magnificent native bushland. Maple trees hug the  banks of the Yackandandah Creek creating a beautiful landscape and picturesque setting for you to sit a while and watch the splendid bird and wildlife. If you are quiet you may see wombats, echidnas, possums, koalas, trout and even crayfish!

Gorge Walk Details

The walk is accessible from the car park on Bells Flat Road and takes about 5 minutes. The top of the gorge walk from the car park is steep and requires the walker to be sure footed and relatively fit. There is a story board at the car park entrance to the gorge with a map and details of the gorge.

If you are feeling more energetic you can follow the walking trail from the town centre along Yackandandah Creek up to the gorge. This walk takes about 40 minutes in each direction. There is a story board located at the sports park where the walking trail starts at the Yackandandah Creek. The story board provides directions, map and details.

If you would like a map you can download to take with you click here.
Otherwise pop into the Yackandandah Visitor Information Centre in High Street - they will be only too happy to provide you with a map - and any other information you may like.
