Gold Prospecting
Yackandandah is rich in gold mining history. The town itself came into being as a direct result of gold being discovered in the area in 1852.
Alluvial gold was the main source of gold found in Yackandandah and as tent towns sprung up along the banks of the beautiful creeks in the Yackandandah area, many prospectors fell in love with the area and stayed well after the gold rushes has past.
Many people still come to Yackandandah to try their luck and pan for gold. A popular spot is know as 'the junction' where Clear Creek and Nine Mile Creek join and become Yackandandah Creek.
If you are thinking about coming to Yackandandah to prospect, here are some facts you should know:
1) All persons who wish to prospect in any form within Victoria must be in possession of a Miners Right. (Under 18's do not need a miners right as long as they are in the direct company and supervision of an adult who holds a current miners right).
2) Miners rights are valid for 2 years from the date of purchase.
3) Miners Rights can be purchased at a cost of $29.90 from the Yackandandah Visitor Information Centre. Miners Rights can also be purchased at any Court House in Victoria and many Information Centres in the area. To check the nearest location to you please visit the Department of Primary Industries Website
4) Prospecting is permitted in most State Forests, many Reserves and Private Property with the landowners consent. As well as on D.S.E. land in the Yackandandah area, prospecting is also allowed in the Beechworth Historic Park and Chiltern - Mt Pilot National Park.
