FAST FACTS:

We receive many inquiries about our building as it is a masterpiece from our early heritage. So here are some interesting facts: The building was built in 1878. It was the social and cultural centre of town at the time as it contained more than 3000 books. People would come and sit in one of the two reading rooms while catching up on the latest news or enjoying a spot of fiction. The word Athenaeum is derived from Greek culture - based on the Greek Goddess Athena (the Goddess of Knowledge).  According to this the official meaning of the name Athenaeum is 'an academy for the promotion of learning'.
